توحيد
Fundamentals of Islam
Tawheed is a
fundamental part of our faith as Muslims. By encompassing one-third of the
Qur’an, it is the bedrock of Islam. We will start our discussion with the
understanding of Tawheed , mentioning verses emphasis on it. And at last we will
try to turn ourselves to Him alone without associating with Him any partners.
Commentary
Tawheed توحيد
is an Arabic word of which the root word is ‘Wahid’واحد which literally means
“one or unique”. Being unique, it is necessary to differentiate
creator from His creation and to know more about Him of His uniqueness. His
Attributes are unique belong to Him and thus necessitates His worship.
Allah says
“And say praise to Allah Who has not taken a son and
has no partners in (His) dominian and has no protector out of weakness and
glory Him with (great) glorification[l1] .”
We can derive
certain lessons from the above verse
·
لاشریک
with no partners
·
الملک the Kingship and has no partners in it
·
الحی و القیوم The ever living and
sustainer and is above all weaknesses
“ No
partners” necessitates be devoted to Him and don’t keep the intention of
anything else (in your every action) than seeking honour in
Him (His nearness).
Allah does not like to entitle His Attribute to some other
than Him.
Allah says
“Say (o Mohammad) I have been
commanded to worship Allah (alone), (be) sincere to Him in religion[l2] ”
Sincere in religion affirms the difference between the
behaviour with people and the behaviour with Allah. A man can’t equalize ever
the attributes of creator with the creation.
Allah teaches His servants to be the slaves
of Him alone by quoting a beautiful example.
“Allah present an example a slave owned by quarrelling
partners and another (slave) belonging exclusively to one man Are they equal in
comparison? Praise be to Allah but most of them don’t know[l3] ”
READ
Allah is الحكيم and
thus uses mighty, comprehensive and wise examples for better understanding. A
callous individual in his repudiation of truth can never escape from the slavery of Allah
but can merely conceive the wrong concept of liberty. As Allah has abased His
creation which can only sustain under His refuge. And some do not recognise Him
as Lord and hence fall in the slavery of everything such as money and fame.
As one needs to
be sincere in His worship (as mentioned earlier) , some people pollute their intimate relationship with Him by calling upon Him for worldly purposes, denying Him if
not assured by what they demanded.
Allah الحفيظ says
“And of the people is he who worships Allah on an
edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by
trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world
and the Hereafter. That is what is the clear loss[l4] ”
No creation can escape from the slavery of Almighty Allah but can only be deluded by Satan (devil). And whosoever pursuits him earns nothing else than a hell fire
The dominance of
Almighty Allah is out of doubt and thus only He is “benefiting or harming”
someone. No one can harm or alleviate calamity from anyone except His will as Noah (a.s) could not escaped his son from the Lord's calamity. In
barbaric cultures, worshipping to the graves of pious people is nothing other
than associating partners with Him (the exalted).
Allah العزيز says
“…for they do not possess the (ability for) removal of
adversity from you or transfer (to someone else[l5] )”
Even the pious
people can not intercede before Allah on our behalf
Allah(اللطيف) says
“The day that the spirit and the angles will stand in
rows, they will not speak except for one whom the most Merciful permits and he
(will) say (only) which is correct[l6] ”
We should have the
fear of Allah as His punishment is severe and can’t be delayed. We should fear
of associating partners with Him as it will destroy our all good deeds and will
become the source of hell fire.
Allah الواحد says
And follow
the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes
upon you suddenly while you do not perceive, lest a soul should say, "Oh
[how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allah and that I
was among the mockers. Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I
would have been among the righteous. Or [lest] it say when it sees the
punishment, “If only I had another turn so I could be among the doers of good. But
yes, there had come to you My verses, but you denied them and were arrogant,
and you were among the disbelievers. And on the Day of Resurrection you will
see those who lied about Allah [with] their faces blackened. Is there not in
Hell a residence for the arrogant? And Allah will save those who feared Him by
their attainment; no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve. Allah is the
Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs. To Him
belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And they who disbelieve in the
verses of Allah – it is those who are the losers. Say, [O Muhammad], “Is it
other than Allah that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?” And it was
already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate
[anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would
surely be among the losers.” Rather, worship [only] Allah and be among the
grateful. They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth
entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens
will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they
associate with Him[l7] .”
And every part of human body will speak only
what it would have done in this world and a grain of mistreatment will not be done
to anyone.
Allah العليم will disclose
what we have been concealing in our bosoms.
“…none of your
secrets will be hidden[l8] ”
Allah is القهار but He is also الغفار forgiving as He says
“Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous
deeds, for them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good حسنات and Allah is ever forgiving Merciful[l9] ”.
Therefore we must submit
ourselves to Allah (sublime) alone and must not associate with Him any partners.
Allah knows every sin we commit and covers it. So we need to purify ourselves (internally)
whenever we perceive the committed sin and should also cover the sins of others
as if we like to cover our sins.
